Activities such as apiculture and meliponiculture have an important role in the subsistence economies of many localities in the semi-arid region of Brazil, and these activities contribute to sustainable regional development by using resources naturally supplied by the flora and fauna characteristic of the Caatinga biome. As such, melissopalynological studies can offer valuable information about apiculture and meliponiculture products (mainly valuable in terms of exportation markets) as they can indicate botanical and geographical origin of the products (Santos, 2006; Oliveira et al., 2010).
