The anionic polyelectrolyte carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is an important derivative of cellulose with good water solubility resulting from the –CH2COOH groups in its skeleton. The polar carboxyl groups give CMC chemically reactive and strongly hydrophilic characteristics, and so it shows promising application in superabsorbent fields. It has attracted considerable attention due to its unique properties such as high viscosity, transparency, hydrophilicity, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and film forming ability.
