The application of multimodal transport in biofuel supply chain
design remains scarce and there are only limited studies (Akgul
et al., 2012; Hajibabai and Ouyang, 2013; Mahmudi and Flynn,
2006; Osleeb and Ratick, 2010; Searcy et al., 2007). One study that
is closely related to this study is (Eksiog˘lu et al., 2010). It provides
an intermodal system (use of containers) in support of corn grain
biofuel supply chain. The model integrates supply chain planning
and operational decisions for, however, part of the supply chain,
particularly at collection facilities and biofuel plants. Furthermore,
the effects of feedstock seasonality on the integrated biofuel supply
chain design have not been addressed and it is however critical as
the variations in feedstock yields can alter the delivery decisions
and may consequently affect the setting of supply chain.
