Historical forces, the character of the domestic political system and the strength of the appeal of the peace constitution within Japan combined to intensify this reactive quality of Japanese foreign policy. The policy has not been without its successes and arguable it has served Japan well. The country has prospered and become an economic superpower without becoming embroiled in the many wars and armed conflicts that have taken place in the Asia-Pacific region.
