Separating fact from (science) fiction
Audiences appreciate an escape and the opportunity to ask, “What if . . . ?” So
science fiction has always been popular at the box office. If a film’s subject
stems from a scientific explanation (even if it’s a rather fantastic explanation),
it falls into this genre. Science fiction also includes interplanetary
worlds with aliens and monsters and plays on the idea that we may not be
alone in the universe. Here are some titles that are considered science fiction,
even though you probably didn’t study them in science class:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
 Jurassic Park
 Men in Black
 Star Wars
Science fiction stories can be very expensive to produce and are normally out
of reach for a low-budget independent film. However, computer-generated
creatures and effects are making it easier.
