Building superior resources, product and service differentiation, diversity in product line and
innovation to competitors is vital to the creation of competitive advantage. To develop such capabilities,
organisations need to understand the environment, including competitors, suppliers, customers,
regulations and potential partners. Environmental assessment has been found to influence organisational
adoption of ERP (Ram et al., 2013). Conducting an environmental assessment will help organisations to
devise strategies, putting relevant plans in place and deriving leadership to achieve differential benefits
and competitive advantage after ERP adoption. Thus, we study the following hypothesis
