The issue of pottery consumption and use is also taken up by Sinopoli using data from the remarkable site of Vijayanagara in southern India. This imperial capital, with up to a quarter of a million people, was composed of dozens of different castes and at least three different languages. using a combination of written documents and ceramic data, Sinopoli describes the various social, ideological, and economic factors that impact pottery variability and use. One interesting aspect of Hindu society is that there are no elite wares or be vulnerable to the absorption of impurities and thus it is avoided by the higher castes. Nonetheless, Sinopoli found evidence for widespread use of pottery and was able to, among other things, examine the different functional classes of vessels present in different parts of the city.
