This species contains chemical compounds
such as flavonoids, saponins and tannins (Hoffmann
and Holzl 1988, Silva et al. 2011, Valdés and Rego 2001) all of which with proven biocidal activity,
including against snails (Filho 2010, Lopes et al.
2011, Schaufelberger and Hostettmann 1983).
