Burnett and Towle (3) presented data showing that the
perfused gills of Callinectes saeidus acclimated in 5% SW
could transport “Na into the hemolymph against a large,
outwardly directed sodium gradient applied across the
gill and that such transport was inhibited by internal ouabain,
external amiloride and by internal cyanide and iodoacetate.
Their results are consistent with the currently
accepted model for gill sodium transport:
