Powder ofOnionshellsasasourceofnatural flavonoiddye(Quercetin)andcottonfabricswereexposed
to absorbeddosesof2,4,6,8and10kGyusingCs-137gammairradiator.Irradiatedandun-irradiated
dyepowderwasusedforextractionofquercetinaswellasantibacterial,hemolyticandantioxidant
activities werealsodeterminedtoobservetheeffectofradiation.Furthermore,colorstrengthand
colourfastness ofirradiatedfabricswereimprovedbyusingpreandpost-mordantssuchasalumand
iron. Itisfoundthat4kGyistheoptimalabsorbeddoseforextractionofnaturalquercetinextractedfrom
onion shellswhilemaximumcolorstrengthandacceptablefastnesspropertiesareobtainedondyeingof
irradiatedfabricat60 1C keeping M:L of 1:30using10%alumaspre-mordantand6%alumaspost-
mordant. Gammairradiationhasnotonlyimprovedthecolorstrengthofthedyeusingirradiatedcotton
but alsothatofcolourfastnessproperties.
