Previously our group reported on the success of using donor
stool to treat patients with RCDI [19]. A suspension of stool was
administered via a nasogastric tube to 18 patients who had suffered
from recurrent episodes of CDI, despite multiple treatment courses
with orally administered metronidazole or vancomycin. Fifteen
(94%) of 16 evaluable patients successfully resolved their diarrhea
with fecal microbiome therapy (FMT); one patient who relapsed
after the fecal instillation resolved her diarrhea following treatment
with a standard course of oral vancomycin. Given our initial
success, we have continued to offer FMT for treatment of RCDI. Even
though the US and global experience with FMT is still limited, there
has been a growing number of scientific reports on the efficacy of
FMT for the treatment of RCDI. Here we report our follow up
experience with FMT for all patients who have been treated for
RCDI at our health care facility between January 2003 and
December 2010.
