K.H. wahib Hasyim, Hasyim's eldest son also played a significant role in the modernisation of Tebu Ireng. In 1932, at the age of seventeen, he studied in Makkah for a year. Upon his return he proposet a radical change in the instructional system of the pesantren. He proposed that the bandongan system be replaced by the tutorial system which was more systematic especially for the purpose of improving the students' initiatives and personality.Consequently, instruction in the pesantren was not limited to teaching classical texts but also included more general knowledge. Hasyim disagreen with Wahid on his radical propositions because he felt that would create dissension among the pesantren leaders. However he agreed with his other proposals, that was the establishment of Madrasah Nizamiyah in 1943, in which seventy percent of madrasah curriculum comprised of general studies. This madrasah was disbanded in 1938 when Wahid began to be active in leadership of NU.
