Engineering Bio-Hybrid Devices
Rashid Bashir is a professor of bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and also the co-director of the campus-wide Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology. In this podcast, recorded at ASME’s 4th 2015 Global Conference on Nanoengineering for Medicine and Biology, Prof. Bashir highlights how the principles of engineering and biology can be integrated to develop bio-hybrid devices and discusses the challenges of their depolyment.
Prof. Bashir’s team has been designing and building bio-bots, which are powered by a strip of skeletal muscle cells that can be triggered by an electric pulse. This enables engineers to customize bio-bots for specific applications.
