This is an example of part of an actual lesson in which the teacher was questioning a class on a passage that had been read silently. The purpose of the questions was to train the pupils to note exactly what the writer had said. The first paragraph to be read was as follows:- “ There are six different plants in this picture. If you look at them carefully you will be able to tell what their names are. The first one is a gourd. The gourd is a creeping and climbing plant which is very common in Africa and India. Its fruit is very useful and many people allow the plant to climb over the flat roofs of small huts as they cultivate it in their gardens.”
