4. Conclusions
Our C/N ratio and GI results indicate that composting kitchen
waste with a BA reduced the time taken to reach the compost
maturity standard. They also show that SMS formed the most mature
compost. Adding a BA could reduce or even avoid leachate
production, and also leads to the release of much less CH4 and
N2O than compost with kitchen waste alone. However, none of
the BAs had much impact on NH3 emissions during composting.
Of the three BA materials used in this study, SD reduced CH4 and
N2O emissions more than CS and SMS.
