Of this nearly ton of food eaten in a year, 85.5 lbs. consist of fats and oils. 110 lbs. are of red meat and include 62.4 lbs. of beef and 46.5 lbs. of pork. Americans eat 73.6 lbs. of poultry, including 60.4 lbs. of chicken, as well as 16.1 lbs. of fish and shellfish and 32.7 lbs. of eggs.
Another popular protein source is the 31.4 lbs. of cheese and 600.5 lbs. of non-cheese dairy products consumed annually. This doesn’t include the 181 lbs. of beverage milk (beverage milk includes white, skim, 1%, 2%, and chocolate). Americans eat 192.3 lbs. of flour and cereal products, including 134.1 lbs. of wheat flour, much of this which is eaten as heavily processed baked goods. 141.6 lbs. of caloric sweeteners, including 42 lbs. of corn syrup are used, even though they can contribute to diabetes. Americans eat 56 lbs. of corn each year and 415.4 lbs. of vegetables and 273.2 lbs. of fruit each year. Although these numbers seem high, health advocates continue to encourage more fruit and vegetable consumption To wash these down, 24 lbs. of coffee, cocoa and nuts are consumed both in beverages and whole.
