Acceptance and understanding are particularly important when counselling young people because sometimes they are inclined to feel judged and criticized, particularly by adults, and tend to be very quick to recognize disapproval. They are unlikely to talk freely if they believe that negative judgements are being made about them. Consequently counsellors need, as they are able, to accept and validate the young person's story and constructs without judgement. There are two important ways in which a counsellor can enhance their opportunity to establish and maintain a positive working relationship with a young person. These are by:
- making use of typical adolescent communication processes
- using a proactive approach
