18. Pre‐germination
This will assist rapid, uniform shoot emergence in cooler climates or winter
planting. Place tubers in a warm environment for a minimum of 4‐7 days. If
dividing tubers ‐ refer #21.
Remove lids from storage containers and replace with net or shade cloth.
Cover with moist media (vermiculite or potting mix) and hold at 22‐25°C.
Inspect tubers daily, remove any rot and re‐moisten covering (not the tubers).
Take care not to overheat and ‘cook’ the tubers.
Tuber tips will begin to swell at 7‐10 days. Plant these germinating tubers
immediately (prior to root formation) and return remainder to warm room.
Repeat every 2‐3 days until all tubers are planted.
