Hand Hygiene Compliance
Hand hygiene compliance has been studied in
intensive care units (ICUs), emergency rooms,
medical wards, and nurseries. In 34 studies completed
between 1981 and 2000, hand hygiene
compliance by health care providers before
patient contact ranged between 4% and 81%
(mean542.4%). After multiple interventions,
that is, more convenient sink locations, introduction
of alcohol rub dispensers, lectures, feedback,
and posters, the average compliance with hand hygiene
was 53.5% (range: 7% to 92%).10 In 14 studies
(1974 to 1997), health care workers were
observed to wash their hands for 5.2 to 24 seconds
(mean 5 13.3 seconds).11 The Center for Disease
Control (CDC) recommends a vigorous hand rub
of 15 seconds when using soap and water and
rubbing the hands together until dry when using
alcohol.10
