3.2. Pre-emption – replacing a busy mechanic
Mechanic replacement, or pre-emption, is performed in order to increase the utilisation of
the mechanics and the probability of future machine coverage. It also allows the mechanics
to be cross-trained, which minimises the impact of labour turnover. This feature is what
makes the MBS a unique maintenance management technique. Under the MBS a
mechanic replacement occurs when a mechanic of any given category becomes free and
there are no down and unattended machines.
