The first group of Dewar & Button (1986), and Ettlie (1984) has two categories to analyse the intensity of innovation. The two categories are radical innovation and incremental innovation. Dewar & Button (1986) distinguished innovation on the basis of the extent they include new knowledge, taking the risk rate into account. They identify radical innovation as fundamental and revolutionary changes in the technology including new knowledge, which breaks up with the current practice and positively related to the risk that is associated with an attempted innovation.
