Darwin, Australia: 8 February 2000
Eight-year-old, Martina Harrington was walking by a river with her family yesterday, when a crocodile grabbed her and pulled her into the water. Her quick-thinking brother Paul, aged five, grabbed the crocodile by the tail. The crocodile then threw up its head to see what was holding it, and as it did this it opened its mouth. This gave Martina the chance to escape from the crocodile’s jaws. The children’s father then killed the crocodile with an axe. ‘Paul was very brave,’ said a local police officer, ‘and Martina was very lucky.’
