Cancer is one of the leading causes
of death in North America. In the year
2000, for example, there were 65,000
cancer deaths (211.8 per 100,000 population)
in Canada1 and 553,091 cancer
deaths (200.9 per 100,000 population)
in the United States.2 Only cardiovascular
disease accounted for more premature
deaths among North Americans.
Although breast and prostate cancers are
the leading sex-specific incident cancers,
lung cancer remains the most common
cause of cancer death
