Rice, supposedly the main food item of B. gonionotus in rice – fish fields (Rothuis et al.,
1998a), is omnipresent. Rothuis et al. (1998a) found that in a polyculture of B. gonionotus,
O. niloticus and C. carpio in rice – fish fields, B. gonionotus is the only species that mainly
feeds on macrophytes. Macrophytes were good for 82.2 –100% of the food found in the
stomach of B. gonionotus, 4.7– 10.8% in O. niloticus and 2.7– 5% in C. carpio (Rothuis et
al., 1998a).
