Kamphaeng phet national museum has been founded as a museum in historic and archaeological site for collection , preservation and exhibition of ancient objects and art objects discovered from archaeological excavations in the area of Kamphaeng phet province for the purposes of conservation and dissemination of information and knowledge in archaeology , history and local art of Kamphaeng phet construction of the museum building began in 1967 and the museum was officially opened on 19th march, 1971, presided over by Mr.Sukit Nimmanhemin then Minister of Education , representative of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
When first built, the museum was a modern Thai style, 2-storey building, later, 3 more buildings have been added with connection corridors that link all buildings together. In 2009 a sum of budget was allotted to Kamphaeng phet National Museum for renovation of permanent exhibition, 1st phase, and the 2nd phase of renovation followed in 2013.
