Some other researchers have reported that many fungi growover a wide pH range and expressions of their genes are tailored tothe environmental pH. In Aspergillus nidulans, the transcription fac-tor PacC, an activator of genes expressed in alkaline conditions anda repressor of those expressed in acidic conditions, undergoes twoprocessing proteolyses, the first being pH-signal dependent andthe second proteasomal (Pe˜nalva et al., 2008). Moreover, obviousdifferences in control efficacy of green mold infections on lemonsand oranges were observed among salt solutions with the same pH(Smilanick et al., 2005; Palou et al., 2001). Therefore, it can be spec-ulated that pH was not solely responsible for the inhibitory activityof NaHCO3, and the exact mechanism of action of NaHCO3againstP. expansum remained to be elucidated further.
