Laminarans cannot be decomposed by salivary,
gastric, pancreatic, and intestinal enzymes. It was
found through in vitro experiments that these polysac
charides are degraded by intestinal bacteria, as well as
laminarases and laminarinases [20]. The probability of
fermentation of agarose oligosaccharides by lacto and
bifidobacteria, but not by colibacillus and entero
cocci, has been shown [26]. When the polysaccharides
floridoside (20glycerolαDgalactoside) and isof
loridoside (10glycerolαDgalactoside), isolated
from the red alga Porphyra yezoensis, were used a
selective stimulation of the growth of bifidobacteria
was observed [36].
