The Lake Duparquet Forest is in the Missinaibi-
Cabonga forest section (Rowe, 1972) of the southern
boreal forest. Balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.)
is the dominant species of mature forests on mesic
sites. It is associated with white spruce (Picea glauca
(Moench) Voss), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.)
B.S.P.) and white birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.).
Following fire, jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.),
trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and
white birch form extensive monospecific stands
(Bergeron and Bouchard, 1984).
