Against the background of the gloomy situation in Brazil regarding the destination of urban waste, we can conclude that the municipality of Juiz de Fora is at a satisfactory level, although the municipal authorities still need to refine the experience they have acquired and join efforts in order to plan the implantation of a new sanitary landfill, since the Salvaterra Sanitary Landfill, although at present a very positive example, is getting near the end of its useful service.
In general, the analyses carried out suggest that the Salvaterra Landfill is not affecting the waters around it, and the treatment of the leachate generated has been satisfactory in the Biological Treatment Stations operated by the municipality.
The biogas has a composition that is typical of sanitary landfills in tropical regions. However, deeper studies could show the economic feasibility of utilising the gas that is generated in order to obtain carbon credits.
The continuous monitoring, both geotechnical and environmental, in accordance with the frequency defined, will enable a better understanding of the state and the dynamics of the possible impacts caused by the landfill presented in this article.
