The Danish-Dutch COBRA cable will be ‘future proofed’ so that
it could connect to wind-farms at sea. Yet this is not actually being
planned for within the COBRA project as it unfolds [111]. An interviewee
explained that building a VSC convertor station on land
would cost circa D 150m, whereas a VSC convertor at sea would
be a multiple of this. As one interviewee from a TSO background
explained: “if I build an offshore grid, can I afford the times it will not
be used given the much higher costs to build it compared to on land?
