Patterns of Computer and Internet Use
There are four basic categories of Internet usage for adolescents (Suler, 1998). The first category is the Web site, which provides documents or collections of documents that can be read for informational purposes. E-mail, the second category, is a rapid form of electronic letter communication. The third category is chat rooms in which adolescents
communicate with each other on the computer at the same time, typing messages to each other that scroll down the screen in real time. The fourth category, newsgroups, is like an electronic hulletin board.
The Policy Information Center of the Educational Testing Service Network (1999) provided a summary of their research on the status of technology in United States schools, which included information regarding computer usage patterns of students. They found that among eighth graders, playing games was the most prevalent computer use. Writing stories and papers was the most frequently rated computer use at home and school by eleventh graders. Ten percent of 308 eighth graders and 19% of twelfth graders said they used a computer for schoolwork almost daily, while 51% of eighth graders and 37% of twelfth graders said that they never used a computer for schoolwork.
A Gallup Poll was conducted in 1997 on students from 13 to 17 years of age regarding computer and Internet use (National Science Foundation, 1997). Five categories of use were generated from a cluster analysis. The analysis was based on data regarding the frequency of Internet use, frequency of use of various technologies, ratings of various
technologies as important or not, ratings of own capability, confidence in using computers, home access to a computer and the Internet, and favorite academic suhjects.
Twenty-five percent of all teens were found to have the highest access to computers at home and the highest at-home access to the Internet. These youths spent an average of 7.0 hours per week on the computer, with about half of that (3.6 hours) on the Internet. In addition, this same group reported that they were in the top quarter of their schools in overall achievement, they were most likely to be involved in after-school activities, and had the highest educational aspirations
after high school.
The second group (18%) was characterized as almost as active in computer use (6.4 hours per week, with 2.5 hours of that on the Internet). They were less likely to have access at home to the computer and to the Internet than the first group. Participation in after school activities was similar, but they were less likely to rate themselves as a "top" student.
The third cluster of characteristics formed a group representing 28% of the sample. These teenagers tended to prefer to talk on the telephone with their friends, use the VCR, listen to music, and use a calculator. They were below average in their use of the computer and the Internet, spending about 2.7 hours per week on the computer, with .9 hours of that spent on the Internet. In-home access to the computer and the Internet was also below average for this group. Ratings for participation in after-school activities, confidence in using the computer, and educational aspirations were average.
The fourth group (10%) used the computer about the same amount of time as the third group; however, this group reported a lower level of technological confidence with computers. Interestingly, they had almost as much access to a home computer as the first group; however Internet access was below average. While their educational aspirations
were similar to the first group, with 81% expecting to graduate from college, and 45% expecting to go to graduate school, they tended to prefer English and social science subjects to math and science.
The final group (19%) was characterized by the lowest use of all of the items on the poll. Their confidence in using the computer was below average. Access to a home computer and the Internet was lowest 309 among all of the groups. Less than half rated themselves as aboveaverage students or better.
The Gallup Poll analysis (National Science Foundation, 1997) did not specify any correlational patterns among the data; however, visual analysis of the results suggested several possible relationships in addition to the cluster pattems described previously. There appeared to be a positive relationship between ratings of academic achievement with
the amount of time spent per week on both the computer and the Internet. In addition, the relationship between time spent in afterschool activities seemed to be positively related to both academic achievement and time spent on the computer and the Internet.
