Currently, standard devices for heart rate measurement require contact with the patient, which can be invasive
and impractical as well as increase the risk of infection in patients with highly susceptible immune systems.
The method described in this paper uses basic
signal processing techniques and a recently developed
approach known as independent component
analysis to measure heart rate from video of a
patient’s face. This simple noncontact method
of heart rate measurement could be applied to
care, as well as provide people with a simpler way
to check their pulse at home.
