After the diary study and the accompanying interviews, respondents received a gift voucher of €50 (diary study) or €100 (diary study + long-term study) as an incentive. The diary contents, MemoLine instrument and interview transcriptions
were analyzed through a grounded theory methodology: the data was summarized in open-ended codes, which were in turn grouped together into themes. In these themes, various uses and appropriations of the game emerged, and this resulted in an overview of different user tactics. This qualitative part of the study did not seek to generalize the findings to players of educational games in general, but focused on providing rich accounts of players’ individual interpretations and uses.
