Production/operations management (POM) is the core function of any organization. That function converts inputs (raw materials, supplies, machines, and people) into value enhanced output. The POM function is most easily associated With manufacturing firms, but it also applies to all other type of businesses (e.g., service and retail firms). POM tactics must guide decisions regarding (1) the basic nature of the firm's POM system, seeking an optimum balance between investment input and production/operations output, and (2) location, facilities design, and process planning on a short-term basis.
