In the solitary condition, the infant sat on the caregiver’s lap looking toward the
experimenter. The experimenter said, “I found a new toy I think I want to play with” (as
if talking to herself) and attended to either the doorbell or the dome light. The
experimenter said, “I think I am going to see how this works, I want to see how this
works” and depressed the doorbell with her elbow or illuminated the light with her
forehead. After a few seconds, she said, “Oh cool, that is how it works. I think I’m
going to see one more time how this works” and repeated the action and the reaction
phrase. After the demonstration, the experimenter moved out of the way and the
caregiver said, “[Infant’s name], can you show me how that works?” This was repeated
for the other object.
