This paper reports on research conducted by industrial engineers involving the application of knowledge engineering in the log breakdown, lumber grading, and rough milling operations for hardwoods in a sawmill. A design for an automated sawmill system and its implementation issues are discussed. Related work applying operations research and computer-aided processing in other areas of the forest products industry are also presented.
