Herein we report the synthesis of an amine containing methacrylic hydrogel through DA reaction in aqueous media. More specifically, AEMA monomer was polymer- ized and modified through its primary amine group in or- der to have complementary diene and dienophile water- soluble precursors able to take part in DA reaction. The fur- an ring was introduced in the polymer structure using fur- fural, whereas dienophiles were incorporated in the form of maleimide moieties. The modified complementary poly- mers were mixed in aqueous media to form chemically crosslinked hydrogels. All the synthetic strategy was devel- oped in water, from the modification of the starting poly- mer to final hydrogel formation, representing an interesting novel example of green ‘‘click-chemistry’’.
