Hypoglycemic episodes range
from mild to severe, with the patient
exhibiting a wide range of symptoms
that require immediate intervention to
prevent hospitalization and irreversible
cellular damage (Lee, 2009).
However, using a standard blood glucose
level (blood glucose < 70 mg/dL)
alone cannot be used to describe the
severity of hypoglycemia because
glycemic thresholds for the onset of
symptoms, as well as symptom magnitude,
differ among individuals and
from episode to episode (Mensing,
2006). Common causes of hypoglycemia
are listed in Table 1.
