Children’s comprehension or thinking processes can be enhanced through caregivers and teachers reading aloud to them, as they can encourage children to make connections between what is in the book and what they already know. Consult the chapter on reading comprehension for more information about making connections(text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world ). When reading aloud to children, teachers can also encourage other comprehension processes such as inferring, summarizing and asking questions of the text.
