In agriculture the types and size of crops produced may
influence the nature and intensity of agricultural exposures.
Study participants planted 1–7 crops, with an
average of 2 crops. Maize was the crop most frequently
planted (n=517; 56.8%), followed by cotton (n=402;
44.1%). The mean hectarage cultivated per crop
ranged from 0.5 for tomatoes to 4.3 for sugar cane.
Women on the Irrigation Scheme cultivated a significantly
larger mean hectarage (3.7 hectares) than
women on the Drylands (2.9 hectares). Drylands
women were significantly more likely to conduct all
agricultural activities than women working on the Irrigation
