This particular nurse was positively encouraged by the consultant to act as a mother figure and to actually mother vulnerable, distressed patients. I have to say that I was struck by how incredibly effective it was. She needed to have time and she was constantly forming very good relationships with patients and there was a lot of normalizing or whatever going on. She was ideal, you know, if you had someone rather upset then she was really good to go along and make them a cup of tea and chat with them or take them for a walk round the ward. She was one of the most positive assets in that unit. (Psychiatrist, Group C)
