A lot of people asked why Kentucky Fried Chicken changed its name. The Commonwealth of Kentucky, one of the 50 states in the United States, is the owner of the word ‘Kentucky’ by law. Anyone who uses the word ‘Kentucky’ for business reason has to pay to the state for the trademark fee. Kentucky Fried Chicken did not want to pay any money, so it decided to shorten the full name to the simple word ‘KFC’. The other reason Kentucky Fried Chicken changed the name to KFC in 1991was to avoid using the word ‘fried’ which linked to ‘unhealthy’ which worried a lot of customers, and might affect the sales.
