Inventive, idealistic publishers are as important, and praiseworthy, as their writers, because they support and promote the art of writing. My choice for best book of 2014 is Dorothy, a publishing project. It pubs two books a year; this year the novels “The Wallcreeper” (Nell Zink) and “Dan” (Joanna Ruocco). And, it’s “named for head librarian, author, gardener, animal- and art lover, bookmobile-driver, and great-aunt Dorothy Traver, who on every birthday gave a book with an owl bookplate.” Its logo is that owl-plate. “What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions,” by Randall Munroe (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
My favorite book of 2014 is “What If?” by Randall Munroe. Munroe is the genius behind the popular geeky webcomic “XKCD”, so it’s little surprise that “What If?” is a scientific tour-de-force. Inside the book are dozens of hypotheticals like “If everyone on Earth shined a laser pointer at the Moon, would it change color?” and “How long could a nuclear submarine last in orbit?” Munroe provides answers, backing up his conclusions with solid math and physics (of course). Then he’ll take the question further into delightful absurdities. If you’re a nerd, I guarantee you will enjoy this book.

The science hasn’t been enough to convince everyone, however. And even more troubling is the phenomenon Neff documents in a new paper, published in the Australian Journal of Political Science: The anti-science myths propagated by “Jaws” are driving real government policies in Western Australia — policies that permit the killing of sharks for no justifiable reason, and that do nothing to promote beach safety, either. He calls it “the Jaws Effect,” and it’s a chilling case study in the ways that politically motivated crusades can spin out of control.
Neff spoke with Salon about what happens when politicians stop listening to science and start listening to “Jaws.” Our interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.She knew she shouldn’t hate him for being such a miser about heat; after all, he’d grown up in a two-room cabin without electricity, much less forced hot air. Still, she thought, as she duct-taped his hands to the wall, this Christmas the thermostat was hers — all hers — and to celebrate she’d be kicking it up to a toasty 68.In a richly textured and finely balanced leading performance from David Oyelowo, “Selma” also returns Martin Luther King Jr. from sainthood and martyrdom to human scale, without making him seem ignoble. This King is a consummate politician and a bit of a chameleon; if we know him as one of the 20th century’s greatest orators, a preacher of righteousness, we see him here as a back-room strategist, a shrewd operator, and a man’s man with a rocky personal life. It is no longer heretical to acknowledge that King’s marriage to Coretta Scott King (played by Carmen Ejogo) was not the perfect façade they presented to the world. King spent much of his time away from home, clearly put the cause before his family and had several other lovers. The recently exposed letter from J. Edgar Hoover threatening King with exposure and humiliation plays a role in the plot of “Selma,” with the bitter twist that Hoover isn’t telling Coretta King anything about her husband that she doesn’t already know.
