Conclusion
Most college freshman experience living away
from home for the first time, and this typically
involves making choices about how and where
to obtain (and prepare) their food. Additionally, many young adults currently or may soon
be employed in the food service industry, as
well as responsible for preparing meals for
their own family, including vulnerable populations such as the very young and elderly.
Developing educational interventions are particularly important for young adults, because
they are developing habits that could translate
into safe practices and food safety awareness
as they become older (Stein, Dirks, & Quin-lan, 2010). Our study adds to the growing
body of knowledge about the importance of
food safety education in the curriculum of college students, perhaps as an addition to the
syllabi of college health courses.
