Taxonomic changes
Molecular phylogenetic studies have re-enforced the
position of Fungi as a separate kingdom of Life, sharing
a common ancestor with Animalia, and remote from
Plantae. The word ‘Fungi’, is now used as the name of
the kingdom, and the italics show that this is a scientific
name. Not all organisms traditionally studied by mycologists,
however, belong in that kingdom and the word
‘fungi’ in regular type, is used for all cellular and filamentous
