The only substantial criticism of the system has been directed at its inefficiency in terms of detecting and processing criminals or its differ- ential treatment of offenders across political- legal space. But even then the criticism is trun- cated. as with. for example. the concept of "spatial injustice" (Harries and Brunn I978). Harries and Brunn note that crime and punish- ment are partly dependent on where a person engages in an activity, and they seek to restore equality in the face of the law. They argue that everyone, everywhere should be treated equally by the criminal justice system so that criminal sanctions are geographically uniform in their certainty and severity. Their book is dedicated to the victims of spatial injustice.
