4.2.1: Forced, bonded or compulsory labor
Contracts shall be clearly stated and understood by hired workers and never lead to a hired worker
being indebted. Salary or part of salary shall not be withheld for payment of goods and services made
obligatory by the employer. Accommodation, clothing, lunches, transport, etc., if and when the
employer makes use of these goods and services as an obligation, are then provided for above the
salary stated in the contract. Job‐training programs required by the employer are fully paid for or
reimbursed by the employer. All payments shall be settled at the moment of job termination.
The employer shall never be permitted to withhold and retain a hired worker’s original
identitydocuments. (Note: Extra care shall be given to migrants and contractor/subcontractor
situations, as they can be particularly vulnerable without their identity documents).
This indicator refers to the right of the worker to choose where he/she will spend his/her free time. The
indicator does not dictate that workers should leave the farm. In many situations (e.g., remote farms)
workers may wish to stay on or near the farm out of convenience
