Oil palm has become one of the major industrial crops of Thailand. The palm oil industry plays a key role in enhancing the economic welfare of the local population and in the economic development of the country (Chavalparit et al., 2006). Many companies in the southern region have been working in palm oil production with domestic consumption as the main goal. Palm oil production generates solid residues on a large scale, especially oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFBs). The OPEFBs are difficult to use as a fuel because they contain much moisture content. In addition, eliminating them is very costly in terms of transportation and energy consumption. Although OPEFB residues can be used, of such as a fertilizer for oil plantations and as a material for growing mushrooms, no large scale uses has been made of them. Today the OPEFB wastes have become a major problem for the oil palm industry, one that needs to be solved urgently.
