The figures on alcohol consumption during pregnancy were surprisingly similar to those reported by
Harlap and Shiono4 more than 30 years ago based on data on 32 019 women from Kaiser Foundation Health Plan. These data were like our analysed by survival analysis. The authors could not detect any increased risk of first trimester spontaneous abortion with alcohol consumption, nor an increase in risk of second trimester abortion among non-abstaining women drinking less than one drink a day, but increased risk of second trimester abortion when drinking more than one drink per day.
