The lack of difference in certain adverse neonatal outcomes between teen and adult mothers is not explained by the improved antenatal care as reported in other studies.[14] [18] In 2001, the Romanian Ministry of Health launched a national program that provides prenatal care for all pregnant women free of charge. However, assuring the early prenatal visit in the first trimester is still a challenge for health care providers because teenage pregnancies are mostly unplanned,[19] and pregnancy denial has led to delayed first antenatal visits.[20] Of interest, breastfeeding was initiated successfully for more teenage mothers compared with adult mothers. More than 90% of adolescents successfully breastfed their newborns, a higher percentage than reported by other investigators.[21] Our study allows us to highlight that adolescent mothers constitute an important target of care for health care professionals; the main focus should be to make the teen mothers aware of their maternal role and, when possible, prepare them for this role beforehand.
